National Guard
The National Guard was first formed in 1803 following the 1802 war of independence. It is a seperate agency from the Armed Forces and does not report to the Marshal of Chiefs of Staff, instead reporting to the Lord-Marshal of State Security. The National Guard serves as a large reserve force of trained manpower which can be called upon in the event of a rebellion or widespread civil unrest as a military force to reinforce law enforcement units. The force was created by combining units such as the border guard, militia and national defence units. Unlike the regular military, the National Guard is permitted to be used as a force internally and is essentially an internal military. Throughout its history it has been used to combat partisans, rebellions, civil unrest and organised crime. Currently the force is tasked with providing security at various state facilities to prevent acts of terrorism, guarding the border and protecting public order.
The force currently has 213,000 Guardsmen on active duty with a further 300,000 in reserve. The force only takes volunteers and is not part of the Imperial Recruitment scheme which requires men to enlist in the regular Army. Volunteers are put through a vigorous exercise and vetting process before being sent to one of the five training centres. Training takes 4 months for guardsmen who are to be assigned to regular National Guard units, and up to 2 years for those receiving specialised training in fields such as counter terrorism or organised crime prevention. All guardsmen are given crowd control training and certain units such as the Border Guards have the ability to arrest civilians and soldiers. Equipment includes standard issue small arms and assault rifles as well as non lethal weapons for crowd control. The National Guard also operates its own air fleet and a large amount of vehicles.
The National Guard is commanded by (NGEC) National Guard Executive Command which is headed by the Director of the National Guard. The National Guard comes under the Office of the Lord-Marshal of State Security. Currently the force can be divided into the following branches.
Border Guard
The Border Guard is a force 23,000 strong within the National Guard that is responsible for the protection and security of the state border of the Empire. As such it is positioned at all crossing's into the Empire and along the border perimeter to prevent illegal crossing of people or smuggling of goods across the border.
State Internal Guard
The State Internal Guard is what the majority of the National Guard consists of. Numbering 190,000 men, it is sub divided into brigades of 2,000 men (95 brigades total) which are based across the Empire. They are responsible for crowd control and the securing of important state facilities. It also would serve as an armed force in times of war and its soldiers are trained as infantry and equipped with vehicles and light tanks as part of this. A further 500,000 State Internal Guardsmen can be called up in the event of an emergency.
